Frequently Asked Questions

[su_accordion] [su_spoiler title=”What text book should I get?” style=”fancy”] I teach directly from the Kosslyn text book and this is the one I suggest you purchase. However, the other ones generally follow the same outline and cover the same material. If it is going to take a while for the Kosslyn book to come in the mail, start reading the online versions. [/su_spoiler] [su_spoiler title=”When are the exams?” style=”fancy”] Check your syllabus, they are on there.[/su_spoiler] [su_spoiler title=”What chapters are the exam on?” style=”fancy”] Check your syllabus. [/su_spoiler] [su_spoiler title=”What do I need to do if I’m absent?” style=”fancy”] You can be absent twice before you are kicked out of the class. You don’t need to tell me why you’re absent. [/su_spoiler] [su_spoiler title=”Which Kosslyn book do I need to get?” style=”fancy”] It is a black/grey cover with a man holding his hat. [/su_spoiler] [su_spoiler title=”Which Gottman book do I need to get?” style=”fancy”] How Marriages Succeed or Fail. There are many different editions with different covers. They all say the same thing. [/su_spoiler] [su_spoiler title=”Does the library have a copy of the book?” style=”fancy”]You will need to check. [/su_spoiler][su_spoiler title=”What is the app I need to get?” style=”fancy”] You need to purchase the Reef Poll app, which enables you to answer multiple choice questions right on the screen in the classroom.[/su_spoiler] [su_spoiler title=”I never got the original email you sent out before the semester started” style=”fancy”]Hi everyone, Welcome to Psych 101! I wanted to share some resources with you to make this semester easier and hopefully to help you learn more. I have your syllabus, powerpoint and chapter outlines already up on a website?www.FlipFlopRanch.com?this is my personal website so you can ignore all the farm stuff (or feel free to take a loot at it if you want!), but your information can be found in the upper right hand corner. You?ll see a link that says Lectures and a drop down menu that says Psych 101. All of the chapters we will go over can be found on this site along with the resources I mentioned above, plus extras such as helpful videos and even lectures on the chapter subject done by the famous psychologist Phil Zimbardo. Textbooks Many of you have asked about text books. Because I am simply the best teacher ever, I have two free and one nearly free textbook option. I teach from the nearly free textbook option (nearly as in it may cost you as much as 5 bucks). The other text books are just as good, but the chapters may be in a different order so you will just have to double check that. The free textbooks are available ONLINE. That means you can start studying immediately which is something you better be doing. Adding Some of you are waitlisted. When class starts today, we will discuss this. Passing my class This is of course the major goal, but I hope you change this goal to the idea of learning as much as you can from the class. If your goal is to learn rather than to pass, it gives you all sorts of benefits. The first of which is that you probably WILL pass. Students who are overly focused on passing rather than learning tend to learn more shallowly and retain the information less?leading to failure. If you focus on learning though, you are going to retain much more information. A focus on learning decreases anxiety as well. Students often suffer from test anxiety. Don?t let passing be your focus and what is there to stress about? Try to be excited about what you?re learning. Psychology applies to EVERYTHING. No matter what your career path is, understanding people?s psychology will help you succeed. The more interested you are in a subject, the more likely it is to stick in your head. Also, get a study buddy (you now have everyone in the class?s email). If you are working with someone else, they help hold you accountable, they catch your weaknesses and you also end up teaching each other as well as learning. Teaching is the most effective way to remember something. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to actually study. So many of my students complain about not doing well in class, but when I ask them how long they studied, they say little to none. If you don?t study, don?t expect to pass. It?s pretty easy. Anyhow, I hope this all helps and I look forward to meeting you this afternoon! Warmly, Dr. Harvey [/su_spoiler] [su_spoiler title=”Why does the website call the lectures sermons?” style=”fancy”]The website theme was originally designed for churches to use and I still haven’t entirely figured out the coding lol. If any of you are good at coding, come talk to me ;)[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]
